The HERMES was funded by the European Commission (DG Research & Innovation) under the 7th RTD Programme.

Project summary

HERMES dealt with enhancing cross-modal transport arrangements of the passenger transport market, and explored and developed prototypes of new business models for interconnectivity.

Interconnectivity was analysed with regard to physical, institutional, contractual, economic and informational aspects and was related to interfaces between:

  • different modes,
  • the same mode, but with different service concepts,
  • and transport modes with different capacities.

In a first step, it was analysed and assessed in how far intermodality and interconnectivity issues are addressed by European transport policy. Furthermore, existing barriers of interconnectivity and intermodality were identified by carrying out Europe-wide surveys among terminal managers, transport operators, policy-makers and user associations.

Insights into existing barriers gained from the surveys were validated and enriched during the Seminar “Interconnectivity & intermodality barriers of passenger transport“ organised by KIT. The results of the Seminar, and the lessons learned from eleven case studies formed the basis for further developing concepts and business models in order to integrate and improve transport services to the benefit of the users.

Research in HERMES was linked to research topics of the EU funded projects INTERCONNECT and CLOSER .
