Project summary
The autoTram project aims at improving the framework conditions for materializing the potential of automation in the tramway sector.
Research embraces the elaboration of an overview of existing applications of automation functions for tramway operations, and the analysis of cross-sectional technologies and interfaces between the required technologies. Furthermore, based on typical tramway operation examples, the potential of automation technologies is assessed, including modelling of tramway automation scenarios and the estimation of socio-economic potential. Finally, recommendations are drawn in order to foster a wider usage of automation functions in the German tramway systems, addressing the challenges of market failures due to missing scale effects, missing product standards, as well as legal barriers.
