Digital technologies transforming the Field of Transportation

  • Typ: Seminar
  • Semester: SS 2021
  • Dozent:

    Dr. Tom Janoshalmi

In this course, Dr. Tom Janoshalmi, SVP and Chief Growth Officer, will offer a Seminar about the unprecedented changes in the digital economy, following the new economical reality and their implications on the transport market.

Use of technology, digitization and new forms of working are accelerating this process, where executives have seen up to 25 times faster shift towards use of advanced technologies, secure data and creating supply-chain redundancies. The ability to transform an organization’s digital core will differentiate between disruptors and those who are disrupted.

The specific focus is placed on how information technology is enabling this change and how business use cases demonstrate the impact.

SAP SE is a European multinational software corporation, one of the largest companies in Germany and in Europe that makes enterprise software to manage business operations and customer relations. SAP is headquartered in Walldorf, Baden-Württemberg, and the company has over 400,000 customers in over 190 countries.

The Seminar will cover the following 4 main content topics. The students will choose an area of research, where the impact of digital technology can change the current industry processes. These areas are expected to be new. Some previous examples are: Early Recall Detection in the Automotive Industry with Predictive Analytics, Solving Overbooking in the Airline Business using Digital Data Mining Techniques, or City Bus Transport Optimization with Mobile Technology in a Developing Economy.

  1. The digital economy’s impact on public transportation through:

    • hyper-connectivity
    • supercomputing
    • cloud computing
    • cyber security and
    • the sharing economy’s new rules.
  2. Roadmap to digital transportation:

    • re-imagining business models
    • redesigning processes via design thinking and
    • redesigning traveller engagement with technology as the enabling platform.
  3. A refection on change in the transportation industry

    • Use cases to illustrate impact of change and outcome.
  4. Field of Transportation’s correlation with Society 4.0:

    • Emerging Strategic Technologies is enabling a significant shift in each of the three categories:
      • Energy is increasingly being handled by automation, robotics and autonomous vehicles;

      • Communication directly with machines (Google’s Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa, Microsoft’s Cortana, and Apple’s Siri). In addition, quantum computing is emerging and the number of connected devices (IoT) is exploding;

      • Data is shifting from centralised databases to decentralized blockchains, and with the shift to digitisation, there is an initiative underway to open source and digitise our entire civilisation, consumers of transportation.
